Connecticut clambakes do not only refer to the scrumptious meals of seafood but they also refer to a gathering of people enjoying the outdoors with tasty seafood treats. This wonderful party idea can go well with any business event, wedding celebration, family reunion, or even a romantic date by the beach.
As it is a hands-on event, the clambake would be a great place to meet new friends because of its casual atmosphere. With summer as the perfect time to enjoy the beach and delicious seafood treats, clambakes are a whole lot of fun!
Clambakes were originally prepared on the beach, over a huge fire. But some local laws have now prohibited beach fires, so today’s technique would have the clambakes cooked over the more efficient propane burner. Even though the traditional method is not often practiced, what’s important is that the traditional atmosphere still lives.
Different kinds of foods may be included in the clambake. Some party hosts even serve stuffed quahogs (hard shelled clams) for starters. Others also have steamers (soft shelled clams) dipped in butter and a salty broth. Others also prefer their clambakes to include clam chowder, shrimp, and mussels. Corn on the cob, potatoes, salads, stews, and cornbread are some of the popular accompaniments. As for dessert, ice cream is considered the most popular. With all the many food additions and accompaniments, the lobster bisque is still the most important part of the clambake.
For that truly authentic clambake, you must first go to the beach and dig a pit two or three feet deep, line it with rocks, and tend a wood fire until the rocks reach 400 degrees F. The hot rocks are then thickly lined with wet seaweed and layered with potatoes, corn in the husk, and more seaweed. The pit is covered with a tarpaulin, weighted down with more rocks, and is left to steam for about three hours.
For a simpler clambake method, you can steam the clams and accompaniments on the stovetop. For the most authentic indoor clambake version, you can place rocks in a large metal washtub across a couple of stovetop burners. Layer in seaweed and clam, and pour in a couple gallons of seawater and then bring to a boil and steam for 20 minutes to reproduce the briny flavor of beachside clambakes.
If seawater and seaweed are just too much, just have the clambake prepared over hot coals on the grill. This will naturally help the live lobster and potatoes boil first as they take a really long time to cook. The clams and corn, however, will be cooked through the grill’s heat.
For an even more stripped-down version of Connecticut clambakes, forget about the grill. Put the clams in a pot on the stove, perhaps with corn and chorizo, or with aromatics such as shallots and saffrons, and steam until they open. Though you won’t probably experience the original cooking methods of Connecticut clambakes, the best part is that you still get to enjoy the healthy and unique way of partying.

The Japanese suffer less heart attacks and cholesterol problems than many other nationalities. The Bengalis in India stay lean and healthy and they share a common feature with many other people staying near the sea. They love seafood and call them ‘flowers of the sea’. Indeed, the oceans present us with a variety of delicacies that are also healthy. Just like the flowers, many fish and crustaceans are seasonal while some are for all the year round.
Seafood varieties ranges from fish like tuna, salmon and sardine to the slightly unusual like the blackened catfish cooked with pineapple or vegetable and herbs. Refrigerated and fast supply chain ensures that supermarkets and online vendors are able to provide fresh fish and any of the seafood variety. Only concern for consumers is the level of mercury and other toxins found in fish. Therefore, fresh fish are to be purchased only from trusted sellers.
Differences in fish species ensures that you can enjoy sauteed tilapia, pan-grilled wild salmon or bass and grilled grouper. Delicious, tasty, healthy, good for the heart and gourmet food are some of the words and phrases used to describe the delicacies and there’s a reason.
Oysters, clams, crabs, lobsters, shrimps and scallops are only a small part of the seafood variety from which you can chose. Seared scallops, grilled shrimps or steam mussels will cause your mouth to water. With a doubt, however, the experience of eating Alaskan king crab legs beats it all. It is very simple to prepare; the leg meat can be purchased cooked and frozen. In order to experience it all you have to do is to thaw, rinse and steam heat the meat. Boiling and baking are also common methods of preparation.
There are varietis of King crabs in red, golden and blue, with red tasting the sweetest and blue yielding more meat. Golden is usually smaller than the other two. Relish the meat of alaskan king crab legs by dipping it in a bowl of hot melted butter, interspersed with sips of white wine to complete the delight. Then relax with contentment for such a delightful meal. But do try to wipe off that satisfied grin on your face.
If you think that stuffed quahogs are exotic dish, you are way off the mark. Quahogs are just a type of clams with round shell. They can be stuffed with all sorts of vegetables, herbs and sauces and even with crabmeat and baked, steamed, sauteed. You can have them as appetizers or as side dish.
Whether you are a seafood connoisseur, or just getting into seafood one thing is certain. The variety that is offered by choosing seafood dishes is truly endless. As a last resort you can always take a standard dish and just include smoe type of seafood as an accent piece. A normal rice pilaf can be transformed easily into a tasty and exotic dish just by adding a Tuna Fillet.
It is important to note that although a very large variety of seafood is available, it is often times difficult to come across items that are in season or may not do well once removed from the ocean. Shrimp is a prime example of this, when removed from saltwater a shrimp has a very short life expectancy. Due to this they are immediately cooked and then flash frozen so they can easily be shipped. Lobster on the other hand can be shipped overnight by any reputable online vendor. Quality Fresh Seafood is a prime choice when having your fresh seafood delivered overnight.

It is important not to overcook smoked scallops, or you will end up with a chewy, inedible food.
Mussels come with blue-black shells and brown hairs called byssal threads attached to their shell. Their meat is usually an orange color and they are full of protein. As with clams, mussels taste great smoked and should remain encased in their shell while cooking.

Serving smoked seafood dish will certainly liven up any social event you either throw or attend. Surprise everyone by showing up with a serving dish full of different types of smoked seafood.

Although the relation between eating ocean fresh seafood and general improvements with regard to health has been known for ages, the exact mechanisms behind the phenomenon might have been considered somewhat ambiguous until recently. A high-protein and low-fat kind of sustenance as various fish and other sea fauna species are, not all the benefits provided by eating them could have been explained via such simple reasons.
There is some research that has been conducted recently that shows how wild caught fish may very well be the better choice than farm raised items. This is due in part to raised Mercury levels in fish that have been farm raised. It is really still too early to tell what the long term impact on an individuals health this will have, if any.
Even though the industry is manipulating almost every food source, and adding all kinds of growth hormones, biologically altering food and generally meddling with nature. All in the name of increaseing profits, fish remains a good choice for a healthy diet.
Following the introduction of new technologies, however, and the discovery of omega-3 fatty acids and their key role to various aspects of human health, the benefits of enjoying a diet rich in, for instance, maine lobster meat or other kinds of fresh seafood suddenly became far more visible and clear.
The almost magical activity by the omega-3s starts as early as on fetal stage of human development. Docosahexaenoic acid, commonly found in fish, crab and lobster meat, is an essential component for building brain and nerve fetal tissue as well as the retina. Consequently, research suggests that higher consumption of fresh seafood low in mercury by a pregnant woman is beneficial for infant cognition.
Health advantages persist after birth. Studies have been confirmed positive impact of omega-3 diet on resistance to asthma development in young children as well as reduced incidence of airway inflammation cases. And when it comes to adults, they may have really many good excuses for enjoying specialties like live lobster and king crab legs.
Consumption of fresh seafood was proven reduce prevalence of depression in new mothers as well as make them less prone to breast cancer. Omega 3s present in the diet also protect against a variety of cardiovascular diseases, prevent strokes, improve eye and brain functions. Finally, they can halt mental decline later in the life - thus saving the happy fresh seafood lovers manifold the costs of their hobby.
Fish contain multiple advisable substances. They are plentiful in Vitamin D, which offers strong anti-cancer and bone-building qualities. Salmon contain Astaxanthin, which is a powerful anti-oxidant that confers a host of documented health benefits. It also gives salmon their orange coloring.
Finally, utilizing natural ingredients found in widely available food items is in line with most modern medical trends and the prevalent notion that it is much more efficient to prevent diseases than to cure them. To sum up - eat and enjoy.

No matter what anyone says, seafood is healthy and should be a part of everyone’s diet. Seafood in general is high in nutrients and vitamins, which no other food group can provide. However, you have to be careful about where you get your fish from. Local waters, like lakes and rivers, can be contaminated and your fish could contain chemicals like mercury or PCBs. The easiest way to obtain a healthy serving of fish is to eat at your local restaurant or do some online shopping. Online vendors, located in coastal regions, can usually guarantee overnight shipping and freshness you cannot get from anywhere else.
The biochemistry and the lifestyle of fish are why seafood is healthy. Fish are constantly in motion in order to breathe. Consequently, their entire body and, in particular, the tasty filets that you eat, are composed on lean muscle. Compare the sleek lines of a fish with the chubby, unattractive form of a cow.
A side benefit to eating healthy seafood is that it is so delicious and simple to prepare. Unlike unpleasant "healthy" choices like algae goo and grass juice, seafood tastes wonderful. You can’t go wrong preparing fish dishes. The simplest way to prepare salmon, for example, is to rub it with some spice - simply salt and pepper will do - and pan fry it in a quarter-sized drop of olive oil. 6 minutes on the skin side first, then 3 to 4 minutes on the flesh side should cook an average-sized salmon fillet through.
Add steamed or sautee’d vegetables, and a nutritious family meal is done. The Lobster Meat can be prepared by boiling live lobsters, but dealing with the animals can be troubling. Also, lobster is best with drawn butter, which adds fat and calories not included with pan seared salmon.
Another healthy substitution is to grill tuna steaks instead of greasy hamburgers, at your outdoor grill party.Your guests will agree that seafood is healthy, and it also seems classier than humdrum burgers, when arranged on nice plates with a colorful garnish - maybe grated carrots and a lemon wedge. They prepare exactly the same way.
The healthful features of seafood are the magical omega-3 fatty acids, found mostly in salmon, and reputed to clear up skin problems like acne, rosacea, and age lines. Also "good" cholesterol and "good" fat, and a number of essential vitamins. Fish is important for many near-vegetarians, who rely on fish for protein. These vegetarians are far healthier than those who eat no meat at all.
To conclude, fish is utterly beneficial to your health. It is full of substances that are good for you, and unless the fish is from some unsavory source, it is free of substances that are bad for you. Fish can be prepared very easily, and it takes little seasoning to make seafood taste good. Fish also has the added benefit of being classier than red meat or poultry. Eat some fish today, I know I will.
It can often be difficult to locate a good source for fresh seafood, especially if you live a long way from the coast. This used to be a huge problem, and the only kind of seafood available would have been frozen. Not anymore though! With the introduction of the Internet and Overnight Delivery with either Fedex or UPS, you can now get fresh seafood delivered straight to you. Quality Fresh Seafood is one great choice for an online seafood vendor.

The Waters of Alaska are a safe haven for salmon in recent years due to fishing laws put into place to prevent such devastations as the ones in the Atlantic ocean. In the nineteenth century a majority of Salmon were pulled from the Atlantic and canned in New England to be Eagerly sent to California in the 1840s. By the mid 1860s however the roles were switched around and California canned and shipped its salmon produce off to the east!
Today all Atlantic salmon come from Canada or Europe, while the waters of Alaska still teem with fish. This is due to modern methods of managing the seasonal fisheries in Alaska. Of the one billion pounds of salmon produced commercially worldwide, about 70% comes from farms, but not so in Alaska. All Alaskan fresh salmons are wild, living free in the waters of the Pacific Ocean before returning to the rivers where they were born.
Alaskans highly praise the value of the Salmons orange-red flesh and thought that any form of disrespect shown to these fish would cause Sea Gods to take the salmon away.
The close resource of Salmon made made it a common meal for the native people of Alaska due to the wide numbers of them throughout the year and the simplicity of smoking and preserving. The natives of Alaska respect this well desired product with tales from the past of Seas Gods taking away the Salmon if they were disrespected in anyway.
The high fat content makes salmon an ideal food to preserve and flavor with smoke. Native Alaskans have been doing just that for centuries. The natural oils of the fish welcome the smoke flavor and retain it in a splendid way. But creating the best mouth-watering Alaskan Smoked Salmon isn’t as simple as placing the salmon in the smokehouse.
Cures are categorized in two fields, wet and dry. Wet cures require the meat to be soaked in a brine solution which can contain pepper, sugar, salt, and other spices. The dry variety of curing is typically to produce cured only fish and contains a mix of herbs or fruit, seat salt, and sugar.
Another important fact that must be taken into count while smoking fish is the actually species of salmon. There are actually give different species of salmon which exist in Alaskan waters, and each offers a different taste in the combination of cures and smoking.
Today, people can find salmon on their local grocery store shelves, but this variety is typically farm raised and cold smoked. For any connoisseur, however, Alaskan High Quality Smoked Salmon is the best bet. The taste of Alaskan Salmon is comparable to fine wine when its properly smoked and cured correctly.

The clambake dates back to the days of the Pilgrims in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Settlers witnessed Native Americans cooking seafood over hot stones and seaweed and thus the famous New England clambake was born. The Homemade Lobster clambake has become a summer tradition not only in New England but also all over the country. Now, with the Internet, you can have Maine live lobster shipped from New England to anywhere in the United States.
The main stars of the clambake are of course, the lobsters. They come in many sizes - the smallest kinds which weigh around 1 - 1.25 pounds are called the chickens, 1.25-pound lobsters are called Quarter, and 1.20-pound are Half lobsters. Those people who have small appetites will be glad with chicken types to be served with another main course. However, for those who prefer to have a hearty meal, they’ll be happier with Quarter or Half lobsters.
There are also different types of shellfish and clams. But you don’t have to worry as any type of shellfish will go well with lobster bisque. But if you want your clambake to be truly authentic, you might want to go with New England steamer clams. These types have soft shells and larger sizes. For every person, about 1 pound of clam is recommended.
Corn on the cob and red bliss potatoes add to the delicious distinct flavor and yummy presentation of authentic New England clambakes that would be surely hard to resist. Both can be boiled, steamed or even grilled just like you do with the lobsters and steamers.
Clambakes used to be prepared by Native Americans in a large fire of hot stones in a pit dug along the coast. But since this method may seem to be quite complicated, you can just opt for the simpler and much better one - cooking with the use of pots or ovens. Steaming is considered the recommended way to cook lobsters, so all you need is a large pot with a steamer basket and some salt.
Have the large pot filled with an approximate 1 and inches of water, and for every quart of water, add a tablespoon of salt. Before placing the lobsters in the steamer basket, bring the water to a boil first. And then place the steamer basket in the pot.
Live Jumbo Lobsters which weigh about a pound should be cooked for 12 minutes while those which weigh a pound a half are ready after about 15 minutes. Periodically check the pot to make sure that the water has not boiled off, if it has, add more water while cooking the lobsters. Then remove the lobsters one by one and pull off one of their small legs. To test if the meat is fully cooked, break open the leg.
You can also add shrimp recipes, mussels and even clam chowder to your lobster clambake for a more lovely and delicious feast. And to make your presentation more nutritious and tempting, add fresh vegetables. Now, your lobster clambake is all set to be served and enjoyed by your guests.
